Buteyko breathing technique and asthma in children: a case series

Subjects: 8 children, aged 7-16 years with diagnosis of asthma
Method: case series – all subjects given training in BBT
Results:
- Reduction in B2-agonist use of 66%
- Reduction in inhaled steroid use of 41%
- Improvements in measures of QOL, symptom scores, and courses of oral steroids

Method: Randomized blinded control trial. Group 1: Buteyko. Group 2: Asthma nurse education. Group 3: Continued medication control
Results:
- Asthma Symptoms: Buteyko Group – decreased by 98%, 6 months and remained same at 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- Reliever Medication: Buteyko Group – decreased by 98%, 6 months, and remained same at 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- Preventer Medication: Buteyko Group – decreased by 92%, 6 months and remained same 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- Reliever Oral Preparations: Buteyko Group – decreased by 100%, 6 months and remained same at 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- Preventer Oral Preparations: Buteyko Group – decreased by 96%, 6 months and remained same at 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- Instance of cold or viral infection: Buteyko Group – decreased by 20%, 6 months and remained same at 12 months – Placebo and Control Groups – no significant change
- The participants involved in this study all experienced significant improvement in asthma with a reduction in symptom, medication and improvement in quality of life.

Subjects: 90 adults with asthma
Method: Randomised. Group 1: Buteyko. Group 2: Pink City Lung Exerciser to mimic pranayama. Group 3: Placebo device
Results: Buteyko subjects – improved symptom control and reduction in bronchodilator use. No changes in the other groups.

Method: Randomised, prospective study. Buteyko and control group.
Results: at six months
BBT group:
- reduction in inhaled steroid use of 50%
- Reduction in B2-agonist use of 85%
Control group:
- Inhaled steroid use: no change
- B2 agonist reduction of 37%

Method: randomized to receive either a BBT instruction video or placebo video to watch at home twice per day for 4 weeks.
Results: a significant improvement in QOL, significant reduction in inhaled bronchodilator intake.

Subjects: 39 person with asthma, aged 12 to 70 years
Method: Prospective, blinded, randomised study. BBT group and control group.
Results: after 8 months
BBT group:
- Improved symptom control
- 50% reduction in inhaled steroids
- 90% reduction in broncho-dilator use
- Improved QOL
Control group:
- No change, except slight reduction in broncho-dilator use.
